Vincent van Gogh painted The Night Café (original French title: Le Café de nuit) in Arles in September 1888. The painting was executed on industrial primed canvas of size 30 (French standard). It depicts the interior of the cafe, with a half-curtained doorway in the center background leading, presumably, to more private quarters.. The stars in the painting are in the right location. According to Van Gogh's catalog of letters, Café Terrace at Night was known to have been completed in September of 1888.However, researchers narrowed down the dates that he worked on the piece to the 17th and 18th of the month.

The work of Vincent van Gogh occupies a special place in the collection of Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller, the founders of the Kröller-Müller Museum. Thanks to them, the museum has the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Between 1908 and 1929, they purchase no fewer than 91 paintings and more than 180 works on paper.. Terrace of a café at night (Place du Forum) Vincent van Gogh c. 16 September 1888. Kröller-Müller Museum Otterlo, Netherlands..
