La Basilica di San Lorenzo è una delle chiese più antiche di Firenze: la sua costruzione, infatti, risale ai IV secolo, 383 d.C., e in origine era consacrata a Sant'Ambrogio. Rinnovata in epoca romanica, fu nuovamente ricostruita nel XV secolo per volontà di Giovanni Bicci, capostipite della famiglia de' Medici, che affidò l'incarico a Filippo Brunelleschi, che diresse il cantiere..
